By Sean O'Connell Hollywoodnews.com: Bennett Miller's work on the baseball drama "Moneyball" largely went unheralded. Critics fawned over Brad Pitt's multi-faceted performance as Oakland A's general manager Billy Beane, and sang the praises of Jonah Hill as he risked and stretched in his first non-comedic role. But repeat viewings of "Moneyball" show the effortless way Miller wove the parts together, filming what many called an "unfilmable" book and turning it into one of the finest baseball films in recent memory.
Finally, Miller is getting proper recognition. He will receive the 2011 Hollywood Director Award at he 15th annual Hollywood Film Awards, scheduled for Monday, Oct. 24, at the Beverly Hilton.
“With Moneyball, Bennett Miller has given us a beautiful film, from what many called an ‘unfilmable’ book, and we’re thrilled to honor him,” said Carlos de Abreu, founder and executive director of the Hollywood Film Awards and publisher of HollywoodNews.com.
“Bennett found the heart in this story of baseball statistics and guided the remarkable performances of Brad Pitt, Jonah Hill, and Philip Seymour Hoffman. ‘Capote’ was a masterful debut, and 'Moneyball' further proves that Miller has a real gift for breathing life into complex material,” De Abreu contined.
A critical darling, "Moneyball" also has been performing well at the box office, earning $51.5 million to date. Miller's efforts behind the camera have helped make baseball on screen relevant once again. It's an excellent follow-up to "Capote," and a must-see for film fans.
In addition to Miller, the Hollywood Film Awards are recognizing George Clooney (Hollywood Actor), Michelle Williams (Hollywood Actress), Christopher Plummer (Hollywood Supporting Actor) and Carey Mulligan (Hollywood Supporting Actress), to name just a few.
